Other Libraries

In addition to LUJ Library’s more that 150,000 books, eBooks, and other materials, numerous libraries in the Tokyo area provide invaluable access to research resources. Ask the librarian to recommend other libraries for further research.

Japan Fundation The Japan Foundation Library The Japan Foundation Library collects books, journals, and other materials on a wide range of topics related to Japan. LUJ students are eligible for borrowing privileges or may use materials in the library’s pleasant reading room. A twenty minute walk from LUJ.
Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library Tokyo Metropolitan Central Library has about 2 million books, over 6,000 titles of magazines and journals, as well as various audio-visual materials, and rare materials. The Central Library has the largest public library collection of foreign language materials in Metropolitan Tokyo, with approximately 150,000 volumes housed in the Central Library. Research assistance is available in the library. About 30 minutes from Shinjuku by subway.
MOT Collection and Art Library MOT Collection and Art Library Several museums around Tokyo have extensive libraries open to the public, including Edo-Tokyo Museum, The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Materials may be used on site or photocopied.
Webcat Plus Webcat Plus This is an online catalog that searches most of the academic libraries in Japan. If you find an item on Webcat it may be accessible through interlibrary loan, or you may be able visit the library to use it there, depending on the library’s policy. Consult LUJ’s librarian for access or information about interlibrary loan.
Book Public Libraries in Tokyo Public libraries in the various wards of Tokyo have collections of English and other languages available. The system’s inter-library loan policy allows you to check-out materials from any of these libraries with your own local public library card. If your local library does not have a particular title you need, they may be able to get it from another library in the system. These libraries also provide quiet study areas.
